Discovered in 1798 by the British and annexed to Germany in 1886,
Nauru fell under Australian administration after World War I.
The Japanese occupied the island during World War II and made
1,200 Nauruans slaves on the island of Truk. In 1947 Nauru was
made a United Nations Trust Territory and was administered by
Australia. On January 31, 1968, the country became independent.
Phosphate exports provide for one of the worlds highest per
capita revenues, but the deposits are expected to be exhausted by
1990. @
